Two things drive character development; the example of role models and interaction with peers. Troop 1 has 6 Patrols, with 6 to 10 Scouts in each patrol. A Patrol is the building block of a Troop; Patrols are where the real action of Scouting takes place! When new Scouts join Troop 1, they often join an existing patrol. However, when several new Scouts join Troop 1 - like when an AoL Den crosses over, they form a new patrol or patrols and vote on a name for their patrol. A patrol elects its own leader, who represents the patrol on the Patrol Leaders Council; the patrol camps together, cooks together, and hikes together on outings. Patrols can even have camping and hiking events of their own without the rest of the troop! As Lord Baden Powell said, "The Patrol is the unit of Scouting always, whether for work or for play, for discipline or for duty. The patrol system is not one method in which Scouting can be carried on. It is the only method." |
